Project Coordinator, Cuba Marine Research and Conservation Program

Institution The Ocean Foundation Discipline biology, ecology, international relations, policy Type of position
Notes

The Ocean Foundation’s Cuba Marine Research and Conservation Program (CMRC) is currently seeking a part time contractor as the Project Coordinator.

CMRC represents a decade-long effort establishing working relationships between US and Cuban scientists and policy makers and implementing ground-breaking research activities. In addition the program has developed an unprecedented tri-national partnership dedicated to elevating collaboration in marine science and conservation between Cuba, Mexico and the United States.  The program is in a unique position addressing compelling regional and international marine conservation issues – including coral reef health, climate change and the role of marine protected areas. The relatively unknown waters of Cuba, the near-pristine state of many of its coral reefs and ecosystems, and its unique geographical location and ecological interconnections with the U.S. and Mexico make a compelling case for leveraging the 10-year success of this program into a program that can address the critical scientific and policy questions of our time.

The Project Coordinator position will be responsible for running key programs, including the Trinational Initiative for Marine Research and Conservation in the Gulf of Mexico and Western Caribbean, a group of scientists from Mexico, Cuba and the US that has performed joint research activities since 2007.  Programmatic work will include meeting planning and coordination, maintaining communications and relations with US, Cuban and Mexican partners, reporting and fundraising.  Additionally, this position will coordinate the new educational exchange program, through which U.S. citizens will travel to Cuba to interact and learn from Cuban scientists. Responsibilities will include trip planning and coordination, promotion, and fundraising.  This position will also assist the Project Director in developing new programmatic initiatives with the Cuban partners and be responsible for fundraising

CMRC is seeking a professional with an advanced degree in a relevant field (biology, ecology, international relations, policy, etc), together with at least five years of program leadership experience.   Experience with grant writing, reporting and management a plus.  Understanding/knowledge of Cuban policy and/or policy work in Latin America also a plus. Candidates should have excellent writing skills, an ability and desire to travel extensively, and be fluent in English and Spanish.  The ability to work independently, and as part of a small (two-person) team, as well as great coordination and planning skills is necessary.  Location preferences include Miami, Mexico and Washington, DC, but not necessary.

If interested, please send cover letter and resume to info@oceanfdn.org with “Cuba Project” in the subject line. Deadline for submissions is January 31, 2013
